Well done to everyone who joined us for our Operation Transformation walks this week.  It was fantastic to see so many of you.   The average time it took to walk the 5.8K was 52 mins, which isn’t bad at all considering the paths have started to get quite slippy and a lot of us haven’t been walking in months.  WELL DONE.

I have been looking for fitness apps for people to download on their phones if they so wish.  RTE’s Operation transformation have two apps which seem to be good.

The first is Move your MET.  Professor Niall Moyna has been involved in the development of the app, Move Your Met, which you can download for free on your phone. By following a few simple steps, you can measure your fitness without the need for any extra equipment or resources. You can also measure your own progress over time and compare yourself to RTE’s leaders’ results, which are on RTE’s Operation Transformation website.

The second is Weight Mate create by safe food.  It helps you monitor your diet and activity so you can lose weight, the healthy way. Because it has been developed with Safefood’s leading nutritionists, you’ll benefit from the most proven ways to eat right and lose weight. Inside you’ll find everything you need to achieve your goals, whether it’s saying “no” to that chocolate bar or saying “yes” to getting up off the couch. You can plan your meals with the food diary, track your calories, set weight and activity goals and connect with friends to offer words of encouragement and organise group activities.  This app can be downloaded free from the app store.

The next one which is my personal favourite is My Fitness Pal.  This app does it all.  You put in your stats, put in your goal weight and how quickly you would like to lose it and it will calculate how many calories you can have in a day.  Then the amazing part of this app for me is you scan the bar codes of the foods you are eating, put in your portion and it will calculate the calories, carbs, proteins etc for you, amazing!!!  My mind just switches off when it comes to all that stuff I have a mental block, I could be standing looking at the back of a packet for 10 mins and still none the wiser!  It doesn’t matter how many times people say this is how you work all this stuff out it’s just not sinking in!  So I now have an app that does it for me.

Also this app tracks your steps, shows you a pie chart everyday with your nutrition stats, there is an area for recipes and foods if you cook often and have favourite recipes, pop it into this app and it will calculate the nutritional contents.  Once you save a recipe you can then add it to your diary from this tab.  There is also a blog tab which has recipes,  a 21 day body weight fitness plan, info on working out etc.  You can also sync this app with friends if you want and motivate each other.  It is definitely one to look at.

Again this one can be downloaded free from the app store

There are of course other fitness apps and if anyone can recommend a good one let us know.
