Kids-Running-Race-on-Track-our-pickThe Community Games have been a big part of Knocklyon for as long as I can remember.  Last year however there was only one person that volunteered to help out with the trials for the Community Games and for the first time ever Knocklyon faced the prospect of not being involved with the games.

Sport has always been a big part of this community and we have always been very well represented in the Community Games and over the years we have had a lot of winners.  Even when I was a kid the trials for the Community Games was a huge event, it was a lot of fun and it was one event that nobody wantedkids-race to miss.   We were all very competitive and I remember weeks before the trials all the kids would be out training, kids would be doing laps of the block holding mock races etc, we all wanted to win.  Maybe that is why we always did so well at the games because whoever got through to the games from Knocklyon definitely earned their place because the competition in the trials was fierce!

Due to the poor response that they received last year there was great concern that this year they would be unable to even form a committee to organise the trials for this year’s games.  An SOS was put out in the Knocklyon News and thankfully people responded.  I can tell you that a committee has been formed  and Tracy Maher is the Chairperson of this committee.   However in order for the trials to be a success they need volunteers.  The volunteers can be from teenagers to grandparents.  The trials will be held on 9th May 2016 in Cherryfields.  All the trials will be held on the same day.

If you can help out there is a meeting on Monday 14th March in Knocklyon Community Centre at 8pm.  This meeting will cover what exactly the volunteers will be doing i.e. helping judge the races etc. and what races will be held.    If you are unable to help out I would ask that you spread the word as without volunteers there are going to be a lot of disappointed kids.
