Ireland-FlagToday the school had its flag raising ceremony.  Both the Junior and Senior Schools along with parents, grandparents, Fr Martin & T.D. John Lahart gathered on the green to witness the raising of the Flag.

Mr Kearney welcomed everyone and then both Mr Boyle and Ms Corcoran said a few words.

Mr Boyle told everyone a few interesting facts about our National Flag.

  • The National Flag was first flown in Waterford City in 1848 by a gentleman called Thomas Francis Maher.
  • The Green in the National Flag stood for the Nationalist people of Ireland who wanted Ireland to be an independent country, who wanted Ireland to be its own nation.
  • The Orange in the Flag stood for the loyalist people, who wanted Ireland to remain part of the United Kingdom.
  • The White is for lasting peace between the green and the orange.
  • The Flag was flown at the G.P.O. 100 years ago during the Easter Rising.

Ms Corcoran then spoke about the “vision that the brave men and women had for this country 100 years ago.  Today, it was this vision that we were celebrating and commemorating.  Those men and women passed on their idealism and vision to future generations in the hope that the future generations would honour their vision and bring it to fruition.  Today, we are honouring them by raising the Flag and remembering the ideals that they had for this country.”

Then Mr Lahart got up and said a few words.  After that Sean Stout and Mia O’Donnell from the senior school read a paragraph from the Proclamation.  Both of them did an excellent job.

Finally Emer O’Kane, Liam Durkin from the Junior School and Amy Breen, Connell McGlynn from the Senior School who were actually the four children that received the flag back in October from the Defence Forces raised the flag this morning.

Attached is a video of the flag being raised.

The ceremony was done very well, the kids as always were all fantastic and I am delighted that I got to see it.
